When was the last time you visited the Chinese Garden?

Join artist Berny Tan, SAM curator Kenneth Tay and museum educator Gabrielle Lee in this virtual sharing as they walk you through the making of the artwork, a shapeless mass; a network of times. Learn how the public’s memories of the Chinese Garden were collected, coded, knitted and formed into a fascinating array of lanterns. The artwork is showing at Science Centre Singapore from 16 Jun–11 Sep 2022.
A Date with SAM is part of the programming for Art in the Commons: Data Visualising Jurong, SAM’s collaboration with Science Centre Singapore to develop community-based participatory art programmes within the Jurong district. The initiative is supported by Tote Board Singapore.

a shapeless mass; a network of times is a creative collaboration between artist Berny Tan and the Digital Manufacturing and Design Centre (DManD) at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). The installation takes as its subject the Chinese Garden, which has been closed for redevelopment since 2019. Analysing memories of the Garden contributed by members of the public, this large-scale installation translates a shapeless mass of data into an immersive network of 128 machine-knitted lanterns, each representing an individual’s experience of this common space. The 128 memories were converted into machine knitting instructions using algorithms developed in SUTD, and then knitted on DManD’s Shima Seiki knitting machine.

This presentation is the second cycle of Art in the Commons: Data Visualising Jurong, which is part of Singapore Art Museum’s collaboration with Science Centre Singapore to embark on community-based art programmes within the Jurong district. The initiative is supported by Tote Board Singapore.
